Phillips: Sunderland players received 'rollicking' after Johnson reveal
Kevin Phillips is adamant the Sunderland dressing room received “a rollicking” after the 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury Town.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend said “a little rocket up the backside” might be just what’s needed for Lee Johnson’s side.
The Black Cats dropped to sixth in League One following a draw with 10-men Shrewsbury.
As quoted by the Chronicle (23rd November), Lee Johnson revealed “he made his feelings very well known to the players” after the match.
Sunderland travel to Cambridge United next, who lie 15th in the League One table.
Phillips claimed Tuesday’s draw puts “huge” pressure on the fixture.

“100 per cent Lee would have given them a rollicking,” he told Football Insider. “Sometimes it is what is needed.
“As long as what is said stays between those four walls, I have no problem with it.
“If you do it in public, the players do not like it though. Nowadays you cannot do it. I have no issue with it.
“I hope the players respond to it in the right way. A little rocket up the backside might be just what’s needed.
“Ultimately, it was a poor result for Sunderland against a Shrewsbury side reduced to 10 men. They should be winning that football match.
“It was not great against Ipswich but they got the result. It’s now a huge game at the weekend against Cambridge.”
