Phillips: Sunderland should complete 10-goal striker swoop after confirmed news

Sunderland should prioritise signing a striker in the upcoming transfer window, according to Kevin Phillips.

The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes another centre-forward is needed to ease the burden on Ross Stewart following Nathan Broadhead’s injury.

Lee Johnson confirmed (27 December) in the build-up to Monday’s 3-0 win at Doncaster Rovers that Broadhead would be sidelined for three months.

It comes after the forward, on loan from Everton, suffered a hamstring injury in the League Cup defeat at Arsenal.

The Black Cats only have Ross Stewart, Aiden O’Brien and the inexperienced Benjamin Mbunga-Kimpioka as striker options.

When asked by Football Insider where Sunderland needed to strengthen in January, Phillips said: “I think they need to bring in another forward.

“Somebody who can get goals, especially after the injury to Broadhead. They need to bring someone in who can take the pressure off Ross Stewart.

“I would like to see someone who can attack crosses because they create a lot in wide positions.

“I think the midfield area is looking pretty solid. There is cover in most positions, especially when the injured players come back.

“A forward would be the priority for me. Somebody who can come in and score 10 goals between now and the end of the season. That would hopefully be enough to secure promotion.”

The Black Cats are second in League One.
