Phillips ‘surprised’ by Harrison at Leeds after ‘massive’ reveal

Kevin Phillips has been “surprised” by Jack Harrison’s lack of form for Leeds United this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Sunderland and England striker said the 25-year-old’s goal yesterday is “a massive plus” as it will “do his confidence the world of good.”

Harrison scored his first league goal of the season on Sunday as Leeds put daylight between themselves and the relegation zone with a 3-1 win over Burnley.

As quoted by Leeds Live after the win (2 January), Marcelo Bielsa revealed he hopes the goal will propel the winger “back to his best level”.

Phillips believes Premier League defenders have worked out how to play against Harrison and Leeds.

“Harrison was quite brilliant last year,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs

“He hasn’t been anywhere near as effective as this season though which has surprised me.

“The second season is always more difficult though because people work you out, as a team and an individual. You need to come up with different ways of playing to combat that. The sign of a good player is one that is continually evolving and getting better.

“Harrison is undoubtedly a good player. It’s great that he got himself a goal. It will do his confidence the world of good.

“Leeds have struggled this season. They need players like Harrison to step up. Bielsa will see the goal as a massive plus.”
