Phillips: Tottenham are powerless to stop Alderweireld completing transfer

Kevin Phillips claims Tottenham are powerless to stop Toby Alderweireld from leaving the club this summer.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to a reported update on the star defender’s future.

On July 2nd, The Athletic reported that Alderweireld has told Tottenham he wants to leave and is confident of gaining a move after the Euros finish.

The Belgium international has two years remaining on his current Spurs deal.

He is still an important player at Spurs and made 35 appearances last season.

Phillips claims Tottenham are powerless to stop Alderweireld moving but should use the opportunity to shake up the squad.

“It’s time for Tottenham to have a shakeup,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs

“They have a lot of players who have been there and a new manager, it’s time to move on.

“The only question is, can you replace them? Can you bring in a better player?

“If the player has made it clear they want to go, there’s no point in trying to keep him. You can’t keep him.

“From Tottenham’s point of view, it’s time to bring in a few new players and get rid of the players who have been there, not too long, but ones who have been there a while.”

Alderweireld joined Spurs in 2015 and has so far made 243 appearances for the club.

He was heavenly involved as Belgium made it to the quarter finals of Euro 2020.
