Phillips: Tottenham fans will not be happy after reported Bonucci update
Kevin Phillips has claimed Tottenham should be looking to sign young players who will be at their peak for the next five or six years.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the European golden shoe winner delivered his verdict after it was reported Spurs are interested in veteran Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci.
Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb reported on 5 June that Tottenham have identified the centre-back as a key summer target as they look to bolster their defensive options.
Fabio Paratici left Juventus this summer and was recently appointed as Spurs’ new sporting director.
The 34-year-old is currently on international duty and played the full 90 minutes of Italy’s 3-0 win over Turkey last Friday.
Asked whether Bonucci is the right type of player Spurs should be targeting, Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: “Younger for me.

“34 in the Premier League? Listen, if you come in and make an impact, we did it at Leicester City when Esteban Cambiasso came in and made an impact for a season and he knew he couldn’t go again the next season.
“That’s the gamble for me. From Tottenham’s point of view, they want to bring in players who are at the peak of their career for four or five years to help them challenge.
“You might get a good season out of him but if I’m a supporter you want someone younger for the next five or six years.”
Bonucci has spent the last decade with Juventus, barring a season with AC Milan.
He has played 442 times for the Old Lady and has won eight Serie A titles with the club.
