Phillips verdict on Sunderland sacking 'amazing' Johnson after 'big' reveal

Kevin Phillips has jumped to the defence of Sunderland manager Lee Johnson despite a third successive defeat in all competitions yesterday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend said the 40-year-old has done “an amazing job” on Wearside and should be given the full backing of supporters.

The Black Cats crashed out of the FA Cup on Saturday after a 1-0 defeat at home to Mansfield.

The shock defeat comes after three straight losses in League One in which Lee Johnson’s side have conceded nine goals.

As quoted by the Chronicle (6th November), Johnson admitted he has “a really big job” to try and maintain his players confidence levels.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Sunderland’s form, Phillips said:

“Listen, I have watched a fair few games at the Stadium of Light this season and the feel-good factor was back. The atmosphere was very, very good.

“All teams are going to have blips in League One. Unfortunately, Sunderland are going through one now.

“When you have a bad run of form, the first port of call for supporters is the manager. That is the way it is. I’m sure there are disgruntled fans.

“People will be questioning Johnson’s decisions and substitutions. Lee is experienced enough to know that it is going to happen at some point.

“It is too early to start questioning his position though. He has done an amazing job so far. They are still in touching distance of the top two and there is a long way to go. I would not be pushing any panic buttons yet.”
