Phillips ‘very surprised’ by ‘bizzare’ Fonseca-Tottenham update

Kevin Phillips has admitted it is “bizarre” Paulo Fonseca is reportedly set to be appointed as the new Tottenham manager.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League and England striker claimed the Italian is “very lucky” to be given a chance with Spurs.

Football.london’s Alasdair Gold reported today (June 11) Fonseca is set to be appointed by Tottenham in the coming days.

It comes after Football Insider learned on June 8 that the incoming director of football Fabio Paratici was in charge of the club’s search for a new manager.

Paratici was reportedly attracted to Fosenca for his attacking brand of football and ability to develop players – both key characteristics Daniel Levy wanted in the new boss.

“It does surprise me, to be honest,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.

“With the names that have been linked and the supposed talks that have gone on and then they go down that route for a manager.

“It’s just bizarre how football goes around. A manager leaves a football club and goes to a football club and the manager leaving that club goes the other way.

“I’m a little surprised but he’s obviously got experience. It’s a big job for him, leaving Roma and coming to Tottenham if it does happen.

“He’d be very lucky to get that job so it will be interesting to see what happens there.”

Fonseca left Roma at the end of the season and Jose Mourinho will replace him in time for the new campaign.

He guided the club to a Europa League semi-final but they finished the Seria A season in seventh-place.

In other news, Tottenham are set to land a huge windfall as a transfer is agreed.
