Phillips: Gerrard has just dropped big hint on how long he'll be at Rangers

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has dropped a big hint he is planning to stay at Ibrox for a long time after sanctioning three major January signings, according to Kevin Phillips.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner claimed the 40-year-old is “building for the future” and has “no intentions of leaving the club”.

The Gers confirmed the captures of Jack Simpson, 24, from Bournemouth and Scott Wright, 23, from Aberdeen on deadline day after initial pre-contracts were fast-forwarded into immediate agreements.

Nnamdi Ofoborh, 21, also joined on a four-year deal but he will not move to Ibrox until the expiration of his contract at his current club Bournemouth this summer.

Phillips said the age of the three signings hints at a long-term stay at Rangers for Gerrard.

“I would suggest that Stevie intends to stay there for a while now, it does not look to me as if he has any intentions of leaving the football club after winning the title,” he told Football Insider.

“It looks to me as if he is building for the future. He wants Rangers to get better and stronger.

“The players that he has brought in can challenge straight away but they are also only going to bet better next season and the season after.

“It is refreshing to see his approach and it is refreshing to see the club backing him with funds in the market.”
