Phillips worried by 'massive' Grealish development at Aston Villa

Kevin Phillips has claimed Jack Grealish’s latest injury setback is a “massive blow” to Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Claret and Blue striker said Dean Smith’s side are “not as fluid” when the 25-year-old is unavailable.

As quoted by the BBC, Smith revealed that the attacking midfielder would be out for another “couple of weeks” after he had been rushed back “a little bit too quickly” from a shin problem.

Grealish has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season, with six goals and 12 assists in his 22 appearances in the division.

Villa have picked up just eight points from a possible 24 in his absence.

When asked for his thoughts on Grealish’s latest injury, Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: “It is a massive, massive blow.

“One minute he is fine and OK to be in the matchday squad and the next thing you know he is out for another two weeks, potentially a month.

“It is a blow for Dean Smith and the Villa squad because they desperately need him back. They do not look the same outfit without him in the side.

“I do not like to say they are a one-man team, because no team ever is but they are not as fluid without him.

“For the player itself, it’s also really tough. The Euros are fast approaching and he will be desperate to be playing and putting in performances to show Southgate that he should be in that squad.”
