'Phwoar...Wow' - Exclusive: Hutton blown away in Aston Villa double striker hunt

Alan Hutton admits he would find it nearly impossible to pick between signing Celtic star Odsonne Edouard and Brentford ace Ollie Watkins for Aston Villa this summer.

The former Villa and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the attacking pair are “top players” and he would love to see either – or both – at Villa Park next season.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Villans are in pole position to beat their rivals to the capture of the 24-year-old Brentford star, thanks in part to the striker’s established relationship with former boss Dean Smith.

Meanwhile, the Sun report that Villa are ready to test Celtic’s resolve to keep Edouard with a £30million offer for the Frenchman and hope a hefty wage could tempt the 22-year-old to leave Parkhead.

The Hoops ace netted 27 goals and contributed 19 assists last season, while Watkins struck 26 times and set up a further three.

Hutton admits he would love to see both strikers at Villa Park next season and admits it is almost impossible to pick between the pair.

Asked who he would rather Villa sign, Hutton told Football Insider: “Phwoar, wow, that’s a tough one. Both, is that allowed? It would cost a hell of a lot. It’s difficult, so difficult to pick.

“You’ve put me on the spot here, how do I pick one? I think this is the first time you’ve had me stumped. I think I would go for Edouard – ugh, would I? I don’t know, I genuinely don’t know.

“I would take both things. The thing with Watkins is he can play a number of positions, I think he can play in a number nine, he can play as a winger which arguably Villa have struggled with, they needed more from the wingers last season. He could fill a couple.

“I think Edouard is a number nine, he’s an excellent player, links up play and score goals. They’re slightly different but two top, top players. I’d really struggle to pick.

“If I was Villa picking the players and I’d put bids in for the both of them, I can only pick one, and the bids both came back accepted, I’d find it really difficult to pick, it’s that close. Two fine players and I would take either of them any day of the week.”
