‘PIF to make big Newcastle United announcement soon’

Newcastle United have struggled to comply with the Premier League’s spending rules since the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed its takeover in 2021.

The Tyneside club were forced to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest last summer to avoid breaching the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

The north-east giants have also been blocked from agreeing significant commercial deals linked to their ownership group.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – revealed PIF is likely to make some “big announcements” soon regarding sponsorships and revenue.

Newcastle smashed their club-record revenue in 2023-24 after their overall turnover surged from £250million to £320million.

Eddie Howe’s side could face a battle to keep hold of star striker Alexander Isak as several top clubs are understood to be considering making a move to sign him this summer.

The Sweden international has scored 23 goals in 33 appearances during this campaign, having registered 25 strikes in 40 outings last season.

Newcastle could keep Alexander Isak after stunning twist

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted Newcastle could help their chances of keeping Isak if they qualify for the Champions League this season.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I actually personally think he’s going to stay at Newcastle.

“I think that the PIF will actually resolve a lot of the financial headroom at Newcastle.

“I think that we’re going to see some big announcements coming up fairly soon regarding sponsorships and new revenue.

“Obviously, it would be helped if Newcastle can get into that top five and get a Champions League spot.

“But I think that Isak would actually prefer to stay there and I think it may well happen, so I don’t think there will be a move.”

The 24-year-old will have just 12 months left to run on his Palace contract in June.

This summer could be the last chance to cash in for Oliver Glasner’s side, with Guehi set to make a decision on where his long-term future will lie.
