Burnley forward Andre Gray has demanded a new contract in light of interest from Tottenham, according to a report.
The Daily Star claims that the 25-year-old wants to quadruple his current earnings at Turf Moor to a staggering £100,000-a-week, in a major development regarding his future.
However, it is understood that Burnley “cannot meet” the demands of the Premier League star, whose current deal is set to expire at the end of next season.
It is said that Spurs are not the only team in pursuit of Gray, with Everton also keeping tabs on the striker with speculation mounting around the future of Romelu Lukaku at Goodison Park.
According to the Daily Star, Burnley are now bracing themselves for a battle to keep hold of their highly-rated asset as they do not appear to be willing to meet Gray’s huge wage demands.
He made a total of 36 appearances across all competitions for the Lancashire club last season, scoring ten goals and supplying three assists as Sean Dyche’s side avoided relegation.
Gray’s season didn’t exactly end with a bang, as he only managed to find the net once in his last 11 league matches.
Spurs are relatively limited in terms of striker options, with Harry Kane and goal-shy Vincent Janssen the only traditional options in the role in the senior squad.
Football Insider Verdict
It looks as though Gray could be trying to force a move away from Turf Moor with his ridiculous wage demands. Daniel Levy is known for his strict wage control with Tottenham, so he can’t be expected to earn anywhere near £100,000-a-week if he secured a move to North London. Gray’s goal scoring record and the attitude he has shown by holding his club to ransom show that Spurs should definitely avoid signing him this summer. Janssen wasn’t great last season as back-up to Kane, but the Dutchman is definitely better than the Burnley forward, who has been outshone by Sam Vokes over the last year. Mauricio Pochettino should be looking for a lot more quality if he wants to improve on Janssen.
