PL giants to test Levy resolve with £40m bid for £50,000-a-week Tottenham mainstay – report

By Harvey Byrne

Premier League giants Manchester United are planning to test Tottenham’s resolve with a bid for current mainstay Eric Dier, according to a report.

The Mirror has claimed that United boss Jose Mourinho believes a £40million bid would prise the defensive minded Dier away from Spurs despite chairman Daniel Levy’s reluctance to lose his key players this summer.

The 23-year-old utility man only agreed a new deal with the north London club last September and the report details that the five-year contract was worth £50,000-a-week.

However, with several key players in the Tottenham team attracting interest from elsewhere such as Danny Rose and Kyle Walker alongside Dier, strict businessman Levy has warned that they cannot expect further pay rises at the club.

Now, this could cause players such as Dier to become unhappy with the report claiming both Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris earn double what he is on at £100,000-a-week.

Mourinho’s United are known for splashing the cash and just last summer they broke the world transfer record to bring in Paul Pogba from Juventus for a fee of £89million.

But, despite maybe being able to offer a bigger wage, Levy is certainly still in the driving seat with Dier still contracted to Tottenham until 2021.

Football Insider verdict:

Out of all the current Tottenham first team players Dier is certainly the most expendable and it may be wise for the club to consider cashing in on him. The 23-year-old has yet to solidify a position during his three years at the north London club with many of his appearances fleeting around the centre-back, right-back and defensive midfield positions. From his performances in the Spurs first team it is also clear that Dier is not up to the standards of his teammates and the club can certainly replace him with a better player – they have signed Victor Wanyama and Toby Alderweireld in recent windows, who are both much better. Therefore, Tottenham may be better off taking the huge £40million cash offer this time around.
