West Ham and Leicester are set to battle it out to sign Manchester City’s on-loan Celtic star Patrick Roberts in the summer, according to a report.
The Scottish Sun claim that the Premier League sides both want to sign the 20-year-old in a deal that would be worth up to £15million.
The report also claims that Leicester wanted Roberts as part of the deal which would have seen Riyad Mahrez move from Leicester to Manchester City before the deal fell through.
Roberts has spent the last two-and-a-half seasons on-loan with the Hoops, who were reportedly set to sign the player on a permanent deal in the summer before Pep Guardiola decided that Roberts could only return to the Bhoys on-loan.
The winger has been out with a hamstring injury since November but has recently returned to first-team training.
Football Insider verdict
The chances of Roberts returning to Celtic again next season already seemed remote before this story broke. There’s no way that the Hoops can compete with the kind of money that either West Ham or Leicester would be able to offer the player. Roberts may well fell it’s time to return to Manchester anyway, as he is unlikely to better what he has already done in Glasgow, being part of a side which won a domestic treble and set a new British record of 69 domestic matches without defeat. It seems that Roberts’ time in Glasgow will finally come to an end in the summer, so Celtic fans should just try and enjoy his last few months with the club.
