Noel Whelan Exclusive: Leeds 'experiment' has me very excited for next season
Noel Whelan has revealed his excitement at seeing Patrick Bamford and Kemar Roofe playing alongside one another for Leeds United against York City.
The former Leeds striker and lifelong Whites fan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that the pair are unlikely to have built up any sort of partnership last season thanks to their injuries and that it appears Marcelo Bielsa is giving them the chance to do so in pre-season.
The two strikers started against York last week in Leeds’ first warm-up game of the summer, Roofe scoring their second and Bamford setting up Pablo Hernandez for the third in a 5-0 victory.
Whelan admitted the thought of having the pair of forwards in the same starting XI was an exciting prospect and hinted Roofe could drop into a deeper role to accommodate Bielsa’s preference for a one-man strike force.
Asked by Football Insider if the pair could work together, Whelan said: “I think they can, this is where you experiment, isn’t it? We didn’t see it much last season because of injuries to the two of them.

“This is where you figure out what you’re going to play, what formation. I very much doubt he’s going to change his thinking but can you put Kemar Roofe in a number 10? That’s something worth thinking about, can he play behind Bamford and play of him?
“This is the time to tinker and to find out if these two can get a rapport, get a relationship going and understand each other’s games where we might have two strikers up front. It’s great to think about, it’s an option, it could be plan B.
Bamford and Roofe only played together five times throughout the 2018/19 campaign, Bielsa finding himself with one fit when the other was injured, with just one of those games ending in victory – a 2-1 win over Swansea City.
