Noel Whelan has urged Leeds United winger Jack Harrison to show why Pep Guardiola “raves about him” and “come to the party” during the play-offs.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former United striker claimed Harrison has had a “hit and miss” campaign on loan from Manchester City and needs to justify Marcelo Bielsa’s faith in him.
Harrison has been a mainstay of the line-up this season, starting 32 Championship games among 40 appearances, which have yielded four goals and three assists.
Whelan is calling for more end product from an attacking player who has a prominent role in the side ahead of the play-off double header against Derby County.
“Please Jack, come to the party,” Leeds-supporting Whelan told Football Insider. “I think he has been hit and miss this season. He will be the first to admit he needs more proficiency in the end product of his game.
“He has had the chances, but not been clinical enough. We know he has the quality but he needs to cut in from the wide area, cut inside, make good decisions and open teams up, like Pablo Hernandez on the other flank.
“Pep Guardiola raves about Jack, other manager raves about him. As a fan and as a pundit, I can see a player is there but he needs to be more consistent over the 90 minutes.”
Harrison is set to continue in the starting XI in the first leg of the semi-final against Derby at Pride Park on Saturday, with the second match at Elland Road next Wednesday.
The winner will face either Aston Villa or West Brom in the final at Wembley on 27 May.
