‘Plymouth Argyle cash boost hopes dead after Wayne Rooney sack’

Plymouth Argyle won’t realise hopes of securing a financial windfall after scrapping a Wayne Rooney-driven documentary, according to The Guardian.

The former Man United and England striker left his role at Home Park on Tuesday (31 December) with the club bottom of the Championship and having won just one of their last 14 games.

His exit has apparently now led to the cancellation of a documentary that was being put together about the Pilgrims’ relegation battle.

It is thought that the project had been drive by Rooney and his advisers, with the now former Plymouth boss having had connections with the company producing the series – Lorton Entertainment.

Even so the club had signed off on the project and were hoping to sell it to a streaming service such as Amazon or Netflix in the hopes of boosting their profile to earn a financial windfall.

However, filming on the documentary was paused in the wake of the dip in form the club endured amid concerns it was becoming a distraction and with Rooney now gone, there are no plans to resume filming.

Wayne Rooney documentary cancellation makes sense for Plymouth Argyle

It doesn’t feel like a huge surprise that this project is not going to continue now that Rooney has left his role with the club.

With the project having been driven by the 39-year-old himself, there seems to be a less obvious link between the production and Plymouth, that would incentivise either party continuing with it.

Indeed, fans of the club were far from enamoured with Rooney by the end and so it may not be a good look for the Pilgrims to continue with one of his ideas even after he has gone.

Wayne Rooney’s appointment did not work out for Plymouth

Of course, they are still in a relegation battle and so the concern of the project being a distraction would also still remain as a gamble that is not worth taking given the importance of staying up.

We have though seen with the likes of Wrexham what a difference a documentary such as this can make to a club’s profile, so Plymouth have missed out here by not seeing it through.

It seems though that doing so may have relied on Rooney succeeding on the pitch, and so this can now be considered another way his appointment has not worked out for the club.
