Plymouth fans ‘mean’ as Daniel Farke ‘getting sacked in the morning’ at Leeds
Daniel Farke’s future at Elland Road was a hot topic yet again as Leeds United faced Plymouth Argyle in the final Championship fixture of the season.
With the Championship title on the line, and rivals Burnley up against Millwall at Turf Moor, Leeds’ hopes of lifting silverware took a heavy blow as Sam Byram diverted an effort into his own net on Saturday, 3 May.
Mustapha Bundu caused issues throughout the opening 45 minutes, with his shot eventually ending up in the back of the net thanks to the Leeds defender, and chants started being aimed at the visiting manager.
Despite automatic promotion back to the Premier League being secured by the Whites, Farke’s future as Leeds manager has become uncertain, and 49ers Enterprises have done little to silence the rumours.
Clinton Morrison, who was watching the game unfold at Home Park, was not the biggest fan of the chants as the title-chasing team went one goal behind on the final day of the campaign.
Daniel Farke’s future under scrutiny at Home Park
Speaking live on Sky Sports (3 May, 1:00pm), Morrison said: “Leeds are stepping it up, and the Plymouth fans are singing ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’ to Daniel Farke, which I think is a little bit mean.
Simon Thomas added: “It is harsh, but you expect it.”
The Whites must come from a goal down to win at Home Park if they are to lift the Championship title without relying on Burnley to slip up against Millwall.
49ers Enterprises to take no prisoners for Premier League safety
Football Insider verdict
Leeds will not want to drop straight back down to the Championship after just a single season, but Farke deserves the chance to prove himself as a Premier League manager.
Even so, supporters are concerned by the German’s record in the division, having won promotion with Norwich City on two separate occasions, but suffering a very similar fate both times.
Manager | Games | Won | Drawn | Lost | Win % |
Daniel Farke | 49 | 6 | 8 | 35 | 12.2 |
This is exactly why an experienced figure such as Jose Mourinho has been linked with Leeds ahead of the summer, but it would seem like a very harsh move from 49ers, and even quite a risky one.
There will certainly be more concerns if the Whites cannot overturn the one-goal deficit at Home Park on the final day of the Championship season, but promotion has already been secured.
Farke will need a lot of backing from the owners should he still be in charge for the 2025/26 campaign, with the squad not good enough to survive relegation, but there should be no reason for a lack of spending.
