Poch to make major Tottenham tactical shift to incorporate imminent new signing he regards as perfect - report

By Harry Sykes

Mauricio Pochettino is set to sign Davinson Sanchez for £42million and play him as one of three centre-backs in a new-look tactical system this season, according to a report.

The Telegraph claim Davinson Sanchez is ready to jet in and sign for Tottenham after they reached an agreement in principle with Ajax.

It is said that Tottenham are in line to pay an initial £28million plus a further £14million of add-ons for the 21-year-old Colombia international, which would make him comfortably their record signing.

Sanchez did not report to the Ajax team hotel for their Europa League play-off against Rosenborg on Thursday night, as Spurs put the finishing touches to the deal.

Intriguingly, the Telegraph report that manager Mauricio Pochettino is ready to tweak his system to incorporate Sanchez by including him alongside Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen as one of three centre-backs.

The major tactical shift is designed to maximise the talents of the Colombian, who Pochettino regards as “the perfect man to strengthen his back line”.

Spurs have predominantly used a 4-2-3-1 system since the Argentine has been at White Hart Lane, although he did experiment with some success with Eric Dier in a back three for a number of matches in the second half of last season.

The south American defender has been targeted after making a huge impact at Ajax following his £3.8million transfer last summer.

Chairman Daniel Levy has come under fire from fans and Danny Rose for failing to make any signings so far this summer, but Tottenham remain confident they will land at least three new players before the transfer window shuts.

Spurs fans could be forgiven for feeling underwhelmed at signing yet another rock-solid centre-back. They already have three of those in the outstanding Toby Alderweireld, the mighty fine Jan Vertonghen and the improving Eric Dier. Sanchez certainly represents an upgrade on Kevin Wimmer, who is in advanced talks to join West Brom. But it is questionable whether Sanchez is the player who is going to help Spurs make the leap from second best side in the country to the first.

In other Tottenham transfer news, the club are to finalise a £45million-valued signing today after terms agreed.
