Pochettino delivers trophy warning to Tottenham fans
By Danny Wright
Mauricio Pochettino believes that Tottenham must remain patient in their quest for their first trophy in almost a decade.
The Argentine has said that there is a lot of work in progress towards it but warned fans they may have to wait until they move into their new stadium before mounting a serious challenge.
He also has massive aspirations for the club he’s called home since 2014 and wants them to become one of the best in the world.
When asked about the club’s medium-term plans Pochettino said to the Guardian: “A few trophies, that would be perfect.
“But we can’t get ahead of ourselves. We need to be patient. We need time to try to create a strong team, a strong club, a strong mentality. A winning mentality, finish the new stadium.
“At that point we will be ready to fight like now but with more tools and to be one of the best teams in the world.”
With Tottenham without a league title since 1961 and no FA Cup since 1991, being told to remain patient for silverware could bemuse some Spurs fans, whose only taste of success since the early 90s was in two League Cup triumphs in 1999 and 2008.
Tottenham were one of Leicester City’s closest rivals in last season’s Premier League and that was perhaps their best chance of winning the league title in a generation.
Pochettino’s next hurdle in the Premier League is an out-of-form Liverpool and a win could see them move within six points of league leaders Chelsea.
However Tottenham’s best shot at silverware this season could come in the FA Cup or Europa League.
Spurs face London rivals Fulham in the fifth round of the FA Cup in the middle of both legs against Gent in the Europa League round of 32.
