Pochettino delivers Alderweireld update ahead of Tottenham clash
By Harvey Byrne
Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that star defender Toby Alderweireld will return to the Tottenham squad to face CSKA Moscow.
The north London outfit are set to welcome CSKA to Wembley on Wednesday evening in their final Champions League group game.
They will boosted by the return of 27-year-old Alderweireld after he suffered a knee injury in October during a clash against West Brom.
The Argentine boss revealed in his pre-match press conference that the Belgium international will be part of his 18-man squad, while Ben Davies will make a return on Thursday ahead of the weekend clash against Manchester United.
Alderweireld has been a key part of Spurs’ back four after signing from Atletico Madrid for £11.5million in the summer of 2015.
He has built up a solid partnership with national team-mate Jan Vertonghen and had starred in 10 fixtures for the club prior to his injury.
He will be a huge welcome back to the Tottenham side, who have already suffered elimination from Europe’s elite competition.
However, a win or a draw against CSKA will see them drop down to the Europa League, where they will compete in the knockout stages.
Alderweireld will also be a boost in the league and Spurs have a vital clash at Old Trafford against Manchester United coming up on Sunday.
