Massive Tottenham boost: Pochettino delivers injury update that will delight fans

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that Jan Vertonghen’s ankle injury is not as bad as initially feared in a major boost to Tottenham.

The Belgium centre-back suffered ankle ligament damage last weekend that was expected to sideline him for between eight and 10 weeks.

It would have kept Vertonghen out until late March or early April in a major blow to Spurs’ Premier League title challenge.

But Spurs manager Pochettino delivered a more optimistic update when he spoke in detail about the 29-year-old defender for the first time since he broke down in last Saturday’s 4-0 win over West Brom.

Asked about Vertonghen’s state of mind after the injury, Pochettino said, as quoted by the official Tottenham Twitter account: “He is ok, he’s very positive. We’re pushing him a lot. We expect six weeks, less than at first. When your mind is positive, it’s easier to recover.”

It now appears that Vertonghen could be back in action at the start of March, which would give a huge shot in the arm to the club’s title pursuit.

The Belgian has been an integral member of the meanest defence in the Premier League this season, with Spurs conceding just 14 goals in their 21 matches in the competition.

Vertonghen, who has started 20 of those fixtures, has been equally comfortable as part of a two-man central defensive pairing or the three-man backline used with great success in recent weeks.

Spurs have won six consecutive league matches to climb to second in the table, although they are still seven points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

Supporters will be delighted at the earlier than expected return of Vertonghen as Tottenham aim to stay in contention at the top of the table.

He is set to be replaced by Kevin Wimmer or Ben Davies for Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Manchester City at Etihad Stadium.
