Pochettino: Tottenham have created a new type of footballer with this 23-year-old
By Matt Bullin
Mauricio Pochettino has claimed Tottenham have created a new style of player in Eric Dier’s due to his unique “flexibility” and ability to play different roles..
The 23-year-old is a mainstay of the team whether in defence or midfield and played the full 90 minutes last time out as his side beat North London rivals Arsenal 2-0 at White Hart Lane.
Dier was signed by Spurs in 2014, initially as a ball-playing centre back, but now Pochettino has moulded him into a player who is equally comfortable playing in central midfield.
Few players in the Premier League possess the same kind of flexibility and Pochettino believes it is that trait that has made Dier so successful.
Speaking in the Evening Standard, Pochettino said: “I’m very happy because [Dier is] a great guy and he deserves it. I think we created altogether a new style player. He can play different roles.

“It’s fantastic, that flexibility he provides with his quality for the team. He’s been a fantastic signing for the club.”
The 23-year-old has been a mainstay in Spurs’ side this term, whether he is playing at centre back, or further up the pitch, he has made 44 league and cup appearances.
The 17-time England international has also scored two goals this season and supplied two assists.
Next up for Spurs is a Friday night trip to the London Stadium to face 15th-placed West Ham.
A win for Pochettino’s side will see them close the gap on league leaders Chelsea to just one point, with the Blues facing Middlesbrough on Monday night.
In other Tottenham news, Pochettino believes this is the most important person at the club.
