Pochettino must tear into this liability if Tottenham are to taste CL success
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino needs to give right back Serge Aurier a rollicking after his display against Juventus if the club are to taste some sort of success in the Champions League this season.
A shocking start allowed the Italian giants to take an early 2-0 lead in Turin and it required hearts and guts from the north London side to pull off an impressive 2-2 draw come full time, thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen.
However it could have been a much different result had Gonzalo Higuain netted his third goal just before the stroke of half time from the penalty spot, but the Argentine striker missed out on his hat trick after he cannoned his shot off the crossbar.
It was Aurier who conceded the penalty with a rash foul, and it was not the first time the Spurs faithful have seen their summer signing put a result at risk with his antics on the pitch.
The 25-year-old has shown great attacking potency down the right flank with his pace and crossing but his defensive contribution has been questionable, as has his decisions both on and off the ball which have seen him labelled a liability at times.
Guilty of conceding possession on numerous occasions against Juve, it was this lack of concentration which led to him being forced to commit a foul earning him a yellow card, which will see him suspended for the second leg.
Having appeared in all but one of the club’s Champions League outings, it will be a time for him to reflect on what he needs to do going forward, but his manager should be tearing into him for putting the result at risk more than anyone else on the pitch.
Hopefully for Spurs a kick up the backside can get Aurier to focus on what he needs to improve on in future games, and if they can get the best out of him at both ends then he could play a real part in their future success in Europe.
