Postecoglou baffled as Celtic suffer 'Tottenham syndrome' - pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Celtic are suffering from “Tottenham syndrome” after conceding twice in the win over Ferencvaros.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Aberdeen striker suggested Ange Postecoglou will be baffled by his side’s inability to keep clean sheets.

Goals from Kyogo Furuhashi, Liel Abada and Jota sealed a 3-2 victory for the Bhoys on Thursday night.

The Bhoys have kept just one clean sheet in Europe and conceded 10 goals in four games.

They have performed better domestically, keeping the opposition out in half of their 12 league games.

Whelan admitted the result was the most important thing for Postecoglou on Thursday.

However, he insisted the Hoops boss would be “scratching his head” over their defensive woes.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It was more important they got the three points against Ferencvaros, no matter which way they came.

“He will be scratching his head about his side’s defensive abilities to keep clean sheets.

“You’ve got to put it down to the defenders. Defending is a team game. When you’re in certain areas it’s down to organisation, it’s down to talking. It’s about the ability and mental strength to keep clean sheets and be aggressive.

“But they can’t keep conceding goals and expecting to win games 3-2. In Europe you’ve got to be more defensively assured. You’re coming up against better opposition, that’s why they’re in these competitions.

“He’ll be pleased on one hand they scored three fantastic goals but you’ve got to back basics. Why are we conceding goals? Why are we allowing them these opportunities to score two goals?

“Defensively, they’ve got to be a little bit more compact, more aggressive, more organised. If you get that right, you know you’re going to score goals.

“It’s like Tottenham syndrome. They’ve got a great forward line and midfield, bud defensively they’re not keeping clean sheets. Is it confidence, is it ability? You have got to sort it out soon.”

Spurs also won 3-2 on Thursday in their Europa Conference League tie against Vitesse Arnhem.
