Potential £37.5m Celtic windfall leaves pundit awestruck

Celtic have done incredibly well to secure £37.5million from the sales of Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer this summer, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England goalkeeper, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is impressed by the deals considering the financial climate and duo’s contract situation.

On deadline day, Celtic confirmed the departure of Edouard to Crystal Palace on a permanent deal.

As revealed by Football Insider (September 1), the Hoops will receive an initial £15million from the transfer which could rise to £20m with add-ons.

Kristoffer Ajer joined Premier League newcomers Brentford earlier in the window.

It is understood the two clubs agreed a £17.5million deal for the centre-half, which is worth an initial £13.5m topped up by over £4m of add-ons.

Both players’ contracts at Parkhead were due to expire at the end of May 2022.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the deals, Robinson said:

“That is incredibly good business considering they both only had 12 months left on their contract.

“When players of that quality get down to that stage of their contract it is very difficult to keep them and in a lot of cases they will leave for free a year later.

“To get close to £40million for the two of them is great business, especially given the finances in football right now.

“You just hope some of that money gets reinvested into the squad in the January window.”
