Premier League chief told to resign ‘ASAP’ after Man City update – Keith Wyness

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has called for the Premier League’s chair Alison Brittain to resign immediately following the verdict in Manchester City’s associated party transactions (APT) case.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Brittain has been “completely absent” throughout the entire case.

Man City took legal action against the Premier League regarding the APT rules currently in place at an arbitration hearing in June.

Both sides have claimed a victory in the case after the arbitration panel’s decision was published on 7 October, where two aspects of the rules were deemed to be unlawful.

The Premier League welcomed the tribunal’s findings, saying it rejected the majority of Man City’s challenges and “endorsed the overall objectives, framework and decision-making of the APT system”.

But Pep Guardiola’s side have since written to the 19 other top-flight clubs criticising the governing body’s summary of the panel’s ruling, claiming it contains “several inaccuracies”.

While chief executive Richard Masters is often seen representing the Premier League publicly, Brittain has been its chair since January 2023.

Premier League need big personalities after Man City ruling

Wyness has now called for her to step down following the latest court battle against Man City.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “There are some weak points right now that the Premier League have got.

“Again, it seems to come down to their drafting, rushing through rules and not doing it properly.

“I’ve got to say and I’m pretty critical as I always have been about the Premier League, I’ve got to say the quality and the presence of the personalities involved are not big enough at the moment in order to handle these sorts of mega clubs.

“We need some really big personalities to handle this at the moment in the Premier League.

“I’ve been hypercritical about the Premier League chairperson, a lady called Alison Brittain, who has been completely absent.

Richard Masters, Premier League CEO

“When you’ve got a crisis like this, and this is a crisis in the Premier League, the chairman has got to be out there, front and centre doing this.

“Once again, I call for a resignation as soon as possible.”
