‘Premier League in a mess after Man City and Chelsea legal updates’

Manchester City, Chelsea and Leicester City have all been embroiled in complicated legal battles with the Premier League this season.

Man City are still waiting to hear the verdict in their 115 charges case after being charged in February 2023, with the independent panel currently considering its verdict.

Meanwhile, Chelsea could face a serious punishment after the Premier League launched an investigation into off-book payments made during the Roman Abramovich era.

The London giants are under further scrutiny after selling their women’s team to owners BlueCo for £200million last summer.

Leicester are also at risk of a potential sanction as they remain in arbitration with the Premier League, having previously exploited a loophole to avoid a profit and sustainability (PSR) breach.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the ongoing legal action is a “mess”.

Everton and Nottingham Forest were hit with points deduction last season after they breached the PSR rules, with top-flight clubs permitted to lose £105million over a rolling three-year period.

Premier League told to fix legal issues

Borson insisted the Premier League needs to reduce the legal conflict between its clubs.

He told Football Insider: “I don’t think we’re any closer to seeing an end to the legal issues.

“You have got the Chelsea situations, which continue to be challenges for the Premier League.

“They have got to approve the sale of the women’s team. That will be under the APT rules. We don’t know what those APT rules actually are.

“We don’t know whether they’re actually valid or void, and we won’t know whether they are possibly until 2026.

“It’s just a mess, and you’ve got the City situation, of course. We still don’t have the decision. Then what happens in terms of sanctions and then what happens in terms of an appeal if there is one? These are tricky situations.

“Then on top of that, you’ve got the Leicester situation, where we have very little information. But it appears the Leicester case is being appealed, so I don’t see it changing anytime soon.

“It’s been for a while the league has needed really to start to reduce the level of conflict between its teams, but it’s not yet able to do that.”

Man City lead Liverpool in race to sign Jeremy Monga

In terms of matters on the pitch, Football Insider revealed on 26 April Man City are leading Liverpool in the race to sign Jeremy Monga and are expected to finalise a deal.

The 15-year-old fits the profile of younger players the Manchester giants have been looking at, while he is well-suited to their system, philosophy and youth model.

Monga became the Premier League’s second-youngest-ever player when he appeared off the bench during Leicester City’s 3-0 defeat to Newcastle United earlier this month.

Liverpool’s interest was piqued after he made a five-minute cameo appearance at Anfield, but they now look set to miss out on his signature.
