Premier League make ‘enormous’ payout after Man City verdict – Stefan Borson

Man City and Leicester City are just two of the clubs currently tangled in an expensive legal battle with the Premier League.

City are awaiting the outcome of their 115 charges case and have also fought the Premier League over their Associated Party Transactions (APT) rules.

Meanwhile, Leicester remain in arbitration with the top-flight after exploiting a loophole to escape punishment under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2022-23 campaign.

Chelsea have also hit the headlines in recent weeks with their controversial £200million women’s team sale yet to be approved by the league for fair market value.

Football Insider revealed last week (4 April) that Man City’s ongoing 115 charges case is likely to take the Premier League’s legal fees beyond £100million for this season.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider that it is “very hard to understand why it’s so expensive” for the league.

Premier League spending is ‘out of control’

English champions City are expected to appeal against any potential punishment if they are found guilty of any of the charges – while the Premier League could also challenge the decision depending on the outcome.

Borson claimed £100million is an “enormous” amount for the English top-flight to be spending on external legal fees alone.

He told Football Insider: “I think it’s a little bit out of control, the spending. This is not the only legal spend. They have got an enormous team in house as well.

“This is just the external cost.

“Then on top of that, we know that they’ve had even some of the non-executive directors dealing with some of the fair market value assessments.

“We know from the APT hearing that part of the adjudication panel included one of the non-executive directors. She was getting up at four in the morning to review important reports and documents. It’s very hard to understand why it is so expensive.

“Obviously, there are a lot of conflicts around, and there are a lot of difficult decisions.

“They have got this difficult case with Leicester that’s ongoing that they’re appealing. But still, £100million is just an enormous amount of money.”

Man City ‘dream signing’ collapses

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed on Saturday (5 April) that Man City have next to no chance of signing Pedri this summer.

Pep Guardiola sees Pedri as a “dream signing” for his new-look Man City side, with Kevin de Bruyne’s recently-announced departure from the Etihad Stadium leaving them in need of a star midfielder.

But sources have told Football Insider that the Spain international is one of few players Barcelona will not consider selling.
