Sky: Premier League side join race for Liverpool man, ready to demolish transfer record

By Will Butcher

West Brom are ready to demolish their transfer record to beat Crystal Palace to the signature of Liverpool flop Christian Benteke, according to a report.

Sky Sports have claimed on their website that the Baggies are interested in the Belgium international, who is also being closely pursued by Crystal Palace.

It is said that West Brom are in the race to sign Benteke and have not been put off by the fact that they will need to demolish the £12million club transfer record they spent on Salomon Rondon last summer to land the 25-year-old.

This comes after the Telegraph claimed the Londoners are hoping to agree a deal with Liverpool this week and that the Belgium international is preparing himself for a move to Selhurst Park.

The Eagles had a £25million bid for the Belgian striker rejected at the start of July by the Merseyside club, as they look to recoup the £32.5million they paid Aston Villa for the services of the former Aston Villa striker last summer.

Liverpool’s target man would feel right at home at the Hawthorns, with manager Tony Pulis preferring to use strength in attack. During his time at the Midlands club, Pulis has used the likes of Brown Ideye, Victor Anichebe and Salomon Rondon.

Benteke is now surplus to requirements at Anfield and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has made it clear that his club will sell the striker if their valuation is met, despite having four years remaining on his five-year contract.

He looks to have fallen down the pecking order behind the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Danny Ings.

In other Liverpool transfer news, the Reds have brought in this former Leeds and Newcastle defender as a scout.
