Premier League star tipped to follow Trippier to Newcastle as floodgates open – Phillips
Kevin Phillips has claimed Newcastle United signing of Kieran Trippier could open the floodgates for more “big name” arrivals like Jesse Lingard.
The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 31-year-old’s arrival would show that the Magpies “mean business”.
This site revealed on Wednesday (15 December) that Newcastle are growing increasingly confident of signing Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier next month.
Fellow England international Jesse Lingard is another high-profile player reportedly attracting interest from St James’ Park club.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano (10 December), Newcastle are showing “serious interest” in Lingard, with contact made ahead of a potential January switch.
“I think getting the first player through the door is crucial,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.
“Everyone knows they will be in a relegation battle this season. It’s just about convincing the big names to start the process off by staying in the division.
“If I was someone like Jesse Lingard, I would be a bit wary of going.
“However, if they could get Trippier through the door early in the transfer window that would show that Newcastle mean business. It could persuade others to make the leap too.
“They’ll all have their eyes on being part of the project over the next four to five years. That will be a big factor.”

Newcastle are sitting second from bottom in the Premier League after 17 games.
The Magpies have conceded the most goals in the top flight this term (37).
