Why Premier League teenager would be perfect Celtic signing, Rodgers reportedly interested

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez would be the perfect loan signing for Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic this month after he returned from injury.

The Daily Mail reported that Rodgers has shown an interest in moving for the former Charlton youngster for the second time, after signing the 19-year-old during his time at Anfield.

After returning from a long-term knee injury to play against Plymouth in the third round of the FA Cup, Gomez could be shipped out on loan to gain regular first-team football.

With Jurgen Klopp having first-choice centre-back options in Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, with Ragnar Klavan and Lucas Leiva as back-up, Gomez could look to leave on loan to aid recovery.

That could mean the 47-time Scottish champions will be allowed to sign Liverpool’s number 12, as Rodgers looks to bolster his defence.

After his performance against Plymouth in the FA Cup, Liverpool fans will be hoping the youngster stays, after a composed performance belied the amount of time he’s been out for.

Signed from Charlton for £3.5million, Gomez was handed a first-team chance by Rodgers at the start of the 2015-16 season and broke into the Reds’ starting line up.

But injury dealt a cruel blow at the worst time, which saw Gomez sidelined until now. Rodgers, who has also managed Swansea and Watford, knows how to get the best out of Gomez as he looks to bring in reinforcements to secure Celtic’s 48th title.

A new centre-back is needed at Parkhead. Kolo Toure, Eoghan O’Connell and Efe Ambrose have all plummeted down the pecking order, while Dedryck Boyata is looking to return from injury.

Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko have formed a superb partnership at the heart of the defence, but Gomez could be brought in to provide cover as a busy second-half of the season takes shape.

Offering cover at both right-back and left-back too, Gomez would be the perfect signing for Celtic in January.

In other Celtic transfer news, this is how the Hoops should reinvest if they get £30million for striker Moussa Dembele.
