Alan Hutton has admitted he thought Rangers defender Borna Barisic was finished at Ibrox before establishing himself as a mainstay under Steven Gerrard this season.

The former Rangers full-back and lifelong fan of the Light Blues, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell edge, says that there is not a lot of competition on the left-hand side of the defence but that the 27-year-old still failed to stamp his mark on the starting XI.

The Croatian international joined from Osijek in the summer of 2018 and has 40 appearances under his belt for the Glasgow giants.

However, Hutton admits that he could not see the left-back having a future under Steven Gerrard and says he expected a replacement to come in over the summer transfer window.

Hutton told Football Insider: “He’s went from strength to strength because I thought at one stage it could be over for him. He’s proved a lot of people wrong and is really coming up with the goods.

“There wasn’t too much competition – Flanagan had been playing there or Halliday, which is a midfielder playing there – so there wasn’t really an out-and-out left-back to challenge him and he wasn’t winning that challenge at the time. I thought they might look to bring somebody in.

“Fair play to him, he’s obviously worked hard, stood up to the challenge Gerrard has set for him and really overcome a lot of doubters. His delivery has been second to none and he’s really playing good at the moment.”

Barisic has made 13 consecutive starts across all competitions for the Gers this season, including appearing in all four of their Europa League group matches.

As well as remaining defensively resolute, Barisic has also contributed in attack with two goals and eight assists under his belt this term, having assisted just four times and failing to find the back of the net once during the 2018/19 campaign.

In other Rangers news, Hutton claims that a “frustrating” player is under threat at Ibrox this season.
