Danny Mills has suggested that teams will be sniffing around Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn come the January transfer window if he continues to score goals from the midfield.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds and England full-back insists that the Scottish international has already started to prove his quality in the top flight and that rivals across the Premier League are going to be taking notice.
McGinn has scored twice in Villa’s opening six league games of the season, both of which have come in north London against Tottenham and Arsenal.
While Mills was critical of the Gunners’ defending for McGinn’s goal, he says that the 24-year-old has begun to show that he has what it takes to impress among England’s elite and that other teams will be courting his signature if he keeps it up.
Mills told Football Insider: “It was a driving run through the midfield and it was a good finish – I’m not sure where the Arsenal defence went, they went missing a little bit.
“I think we saw McGinn’s quality. he’s a box-to-box midfield player, he’s proved himself, he’s ready to get himself into the box and nick himself a goal as well.
“We’re only six games into the Premier League but if he’s still doing it at Christmas and has got five or six goals, then we’ll see one or two teams sniffing around him.”
McGinn, who arrived at Villa Park from Hibernian in the summer of 2018, established himself as a crucial member of Dean Smith’s starting XI on the way to promotion last season.
His outing against Arsenal was his 50th appearance for the Villans across all competitions, with nine goals and 11 assists along the way.
