PSG vs Liverpool ref watch: Three decisions Sanchez Martinez got wrong, including Ibrahima Konate drama
PSG beat Liverpool 2-0 at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night to take a huge stride towards the Champions League semi-finals.
The hosts took an early lead as Desire Doue’s deflected shot from the edge of the area looped over Giorgi Mamardashvili and into the net.
Kvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled the scoreline with a fine effort as he sprinted infield from the left side of the area and breezed past Mamardashvili to tap home.
PSG thought they had a penalty minutes later for Ibrahima Konate’s tackle on Warren Zaire-Emery, but the decision was reversed after a VAR check.
Liverpool’s next match sees them face Fulham, and they will hope for some better officiating after Football Insider looked at three decisions that referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez got wrong on Wednesday.
Joe Gomez should not have been booked for tackle on Desire Doue
Sanchez Martinez did not let the game flow as many fans and players would have wanted it to on such a high-pressure night in Paris.
His first mistake of the evening came in the 28th minute, as he brandished a yellow card after Liverpool defender Gomez had put in a strong challenge on goalscorer Doue.
| Minutes played | 78′ |
| Goals | 1 |

Gomez certainly didn’t hold back in the tackle, but replays showed that he very clearly got the ball, with the Frenchman making a meal of it as he writhed on the floor.
Willian Pacho deserved a yellow for Alexis Mac Allister challenge
Liverpool started the second half slightly brighter than they had looked throughout the first 45 minutes, with Mac Allister making a rare burst through the PSG midfield in the 58th minute.
He was stopped in his tracks by a tough challenge from centre-back Pacho, who stepped on his foot just as he reached the edge of the area.
Not only did Sanchez Martinez fail to book the PSG man, he even decided against giving a foul, despite it being one of the most obvious offences of the game.
Ibrahima Konate clearly won the ball before Sanchez Martinez gave a penalty
Liverpool thought things had gone from bad to worse when the Spaniard pointed to the spot following Konate’s challenge on Zaire-Emery in the 71st minute.
Replays showed that the Reds centre-back had not fouled his compatriot, and had barely made contact with him before flicking the ball from under his feet.
Sanchez Martinez was quickly forced to swallow his pride as VAR recommended a review of the decision, and it was soon overturned.
Sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool want to keep Konate as his contract comes to an end this summer, and he will be breathing a sigh of relief that he didn’t give a penalty away in Paris.
