Pundit accuses Jurgen Klopp after what he’s just seen at Liverpool – ‘it’s backfired’
Noel Whelan has claimed Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp “underestimated” Nottingham Forest after his side fell to a shock 1-0 loss on Saturday (22 October).
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed 19-year-old midfielder Harvey Elliott was the only Reds player to “come out with any credit”.
Liverpool slumped to their third loss of the season at the City Ground on Saturday – with promoted Forest holding on to win 1-0 after a goal from former player Taiwo Awoniyi.
Klopp made five changes to the starting line-up which recorded a narrow win over West Ham last week (19 October), with a number of them forced by the absences of the likes of Darwin Nunez and Thiago Alcantara.
As per Sofascore, Liverpool enjoyed 75% of the possession during the clash and recorded 15 shots – with only seven troubling Dean Henderson in the Forest goal.
Speaking to club media post-match, Klopp claimed he had “no idea” how his side lost the game but conceded it was “our fault”.
Whelan insisted the Reds’ attackers were “lacklustre” and lacked the “potency” which has seen them be so successful in recent years.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “You know what you’re going to get with Forest.
“They were always going to be very stubborn and very solid. You’ve got to play like that when you’re coming up against the top four sides.
“I think they probably underestimated Forest, and that backfired on them. They made a number of changes, and Harvey Elliott was probably the only player that came out with any credit.

“They were lacklustre and not as potent as they should have been with the chances they created in front of goal.
“Forest did a job on Liverpool with good changes to shore up that defence.”
