Pundit backs Declan Rice '100%' after 'laughable' West Ham claim

Kevin Campbell is “100 per cent” sure West Ham talisman Declan Rice is a midfielder and not a centre-back.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Arsenal and Everton striker said the 22-year-old is “world-class” in the middle of the park and his performance against Manchester City on Sunday proved it.

As quoted by the Evening Standard (29 November), Rice claimed it’s “laughable” how some critics still view him as just a centre-back.

The England international has established himself as one of the best midfielder’s in the Premier League this season, despite starting his career as a central defender.

Campbell claimed Rice is one of the only players to emerge from last summer’s Euros in good form.

“Rice has been outstanding this season,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He is one of the only players who played in that final for England who is excelling. A lot of the others’ form has dipped since the Euros. Rice, on the other hand, has got better this season.

“I do not see him as a centre-half anymore. I see him as a world-class midfielder, 100 per cent.

“He was brilliant against Man City at the weekend. He can compete against the very best.”

Rice has contributed three goals and three assists in 17 appearances across all competitions this season.

On Twitter (7 November), ex-England and Chelsea captain John Terry hailed the Hammers star ‘the best midfielder in world football’.
