Pundit backs ‘vital’ new Celtic deal after source’s ‘huge’ Postecoglou reveal

Noel Whelan has insisted a bumper new deal for Ange Postecoglou is “vital” after his success at Celtic in his 15-month tenure.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed a potential release clause makes “complete sense” for club and manager as he garners interest from Premier League clubs.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (24 September) that Celtic are keen to tie Ange Postecoglou down to an improved long-term deal after he was shortlisted by Brighton.

It is understood that the Hoops are planning to increase the Australian’s wages with what one source said is a “huge” offer – and are keen to insert a release clause into any new contract.

Postecoglou is currently still on the 12-month rolling contract he signed when he arrived at Parkhead last summer (2021).

He led the Hoops to the Scottish Premiership title last season, earning qualification to the Champions League group stage.

Whelan claimed Postecoglou has built a side capable of competing with “most sides in Europe”.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “This is the main signing they need to make.

“There were a lot of eyebrows raised when they went for him, but he’s shut a lot of people up – myself included.

“He’s built a really good, competitive squad – a team which has won the Scottish Premiership and one that can now compete with most sides in Europe.

“He’s built the squad, all the players are there – so for him to stay, it’s vital.

“The release clause makes complete sense and it’s good business for both parties if someone does come calling.”
