Pundit baffled as Everton reportedly near ‘really odd’ Pereira appointment

Frank McAvennie insists Vitor Pereira is not the right man to lead Everton away from the relegation zone.

The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider,
is baffled by the Toffees’ approach to appointing managers.

The Daily Mirror reported on Tuesday (25 January) the Portuguese coach expects to be named as Rafa Benitez’s replacement.

He is Farhad Moshiri’s first choice and has caused a split among club chiefs who expected they would take a considered approach to the recruitment process.

McAvennie insists Pereira is not what the Toffees need.

“He doesn’t seem like the right man to me,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“The next Everton manager needs to be a long-term appointment. He needs to be there for a long time.

“This guy has done nothing, from what I can see. I’m already seeing fans not happy with him on social media.

“What Everton need is a proven Premier League operator who can stabilise the club over the next few years.

“This guy isn’t it, for me. Who is he? Right now, Everton need someone who will get them away from the relegation zone.

“What if this guy comes in and they lose their first three games under him?

“Then they are in a relegation fight with a man who has no idea what he’s doing in the Premier League.

“What are Everton doing? This is a really odd one.”
