Pundit baffled by confirmed Newcastle United news - 'I have never even heard of that'

Alex McLeish has been left baffled by the announcement of Eddie Howe’s new Newcastle United deal.

That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 44-year-old’s new terms.

On Friday (5 August) Newcastle announced Howe has signed a new “long-term” deal with the club.

The Toon manager’s previous terms were due to expire in the summer of 2024.

The exact length of his new deal is not known and McLeish can’t understand why Newcastle have kept it a secret.

“I have never even heard of that,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“Why don’t they say how long it is? We don’t know. What everyone should focus on at Newcastle, and Eddie will echo this, is the immediate future.

“It will be what it is in terms of if Eddie keeps going well. He has been given a big new contract but if he loses a few games he will be under the same pressure as every other manager.

“I don’t see any reason why they don’t say how long the contract is, is that going to upset anybody?

“What will upset them is if Eddie doesn’t keep doing what he has been doing.”

Newcastle won their first game of the 2022-23 season 2-0 against Nottingham Forest thanks to goals from Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson.

The Magpies are next in action against Brighton next Saturday (13 August).
