Pundit bemoans latest Everton blow as casualty list mounts
Alan Hutton has insisted the amount of injuries at Everton this season is a valid “excuse” for the recent drop in form.
The former Aston Villa defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted Rafael Benitez has every right to point towards his missing stars as a reason for the Toffees’ disappointing run.
Everton suffered their third consecutive defeat on Monday night with a 2-1 loss at Wolves, with Lucas Digne the latest senior star ruled out through injury.
The Toffees have now won just once in their last seven games across all competitions.
Benitez has had to make do without the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Andre Gomes and Yerry Mina in recent weeks.
Hutton admitted he did not like making excuses for poor performances and results.

However, he insisted losing star men like Calvert-Lewin, Doucoure and Digne would be a hammer blow for any manager.
“I don’t want to make excuses but I will make an excuse on this one,” Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
I don’t like making excuses but I mean if you take three, four, five of the best players out of any team, their form is going to dip. It’s quite as simple as that.
“I mean, go back to when I was playing, at the time we were so reliant on Jack Grealish. If you took him out in the Championship, we were like a different team. It was like what do we do now?
“So if you take four or five of those type of players out, it’s very difficult. They’re going through a difficult period, but they’re going to have to up their game.”
Calvert-Lewin, who scored in each of Everton’s opening three games, has been out since August.
