Pundit can’t believe ‘incredible’ Phil Foden as Man City source reveals £70m+ deal close
Noel Whelan has claimed Phil Foden “needs a lot more credit than he gets” at Man City after his “incredible” start to the new campaign.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 22-year-old is being overshadowed by summer signing Erling Haaland.
Foden added his seventh goal of the season during Saturday’s (8 October) 4-0 win over Southampton – as well as turning provider for Man City teammate Joao Cancelo.
The midfielder has now scored 52 goals for the Citizens since making his first-team debut in November 2017.
Football Insider revealed last month (25 September) that Man City have reached an agreement in principle on a mega-money extension to Foden’s contract – which will see his weekly wage swell to £250,000.
He has racked up 18 England caps in his career so far, scoring twice.
Whelan insisted the 22-year-old must “start every game” for the Three Lions at the World Cup if his form continues.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’s an incredible player.
“I’ve thought this for a number of years now, ever since he came through at Man City.
“The way he’s matured now – we’re seeing a complete player. Defensively he gets about, but offensively you’re seeing someone who is full of belief and confidence – he believes he’s going to score or assist in every game.

“He’s just as important as Haaland to Man City. He’s a creator, a goalscorer, a hard worker. He needs a lot more credit than he gets.
“If he keeps this form up going into the World Cup then I can’t see how he doesn’t start every game.”
In other news, pundit claims Riyad Mahrez could agree Man City move after “big” reveal.
