Pundit can't believe Mourinho could be named Everton manager after Sky update

Alex McLeish has suggested Jose Mourinho would be the wrong type of manager for Everton following Rafael Benitez’s sacking.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss insisted the Toffees need to appoint an “up and coming” manager after their struggles this season.

As reported by Sky Sports on Tuesday evening (18 January), Everton have considered making a move for Roma boss Mourinho.

However, in an update on Tuesday, the broadcaster claim Mourinho is fully committed to his current job and not interested in taking charge at Goodison.

McLeish admitted he is a big fan of Mourinho’s work over the years.

However, he insisted the Portuguese boss would not be the right sort of appointment for Everton right now.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I don’t know what the Everton way is. I feel they’ll be looking for somebody else. It’s just my opinion.

“Mourinho’s a great favourite of mine over the years, a brilliant winner.

“But I can’t believe he’s the one. I do believe that they will probably look to get a really good up-and-coming young guy.

“Not a dyed-in-the-wool, ready manager who’s been round the houses and roundabouts.

“If I was Everton, I’d be thinking that way.”

Mourinho has been in charge of Roma since May 2021.

He joined the Italian giants shortly after being sacked by Tottenham.

Everton currently sit 16th in the Premier League table after Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Norwich City.

Duncan Ferguson has been named caretaker manager while the Toffees continue their hunt for a new permanent boss.
