Pundit can't believe Nathan Patterson as new Everton details emerge

Noel Whelan has hailed Nathan Patterson for “stepping up to the mark” this season after a tough start to life at Everton.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 20-year-old has the “bit between his teeth” after his first taste of regular first-team football.

Patterson has completed 90 minutes in each of Everton’s seven league games this term and was a standout during the 1-0 home defeat of West Ham on Sunday (18 September).

As per Sofascore, the Scotland international had 70 touches, won three tackles, completed two dribbles, and won five ground duels.

Patterson, who joined the Toffees in a reported £16million deal in January, played just once for Everton last term before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in March.

Whelan suggested Lampard has found it “easy” to move on from older players such as Seamus Coleman after a successful battle against relegation last season.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He’s a player who needed to step up to the mark at some point.

“When you’ve got a manager under pressure and a club under the threat of relegation, it’s easy to go down the tried and trusted route with Seamus Coleman.

“Now that they’ve stayed up it’s become an easier transition to move those older players out and bring in your fresh faces like Patterson.

“He’s learning, he’s confident, he’s getting that belief in his game. He looks like someone who has got the bit between his teeth right now.

“He loves a challenge and he’s very aggressive, but he’s also brilliant at going forward.

“The full-back areas were obviously something Lampard wanted to address over the summer and he’s done just that.”
