Pundit can’t believe new Man United controversy as legal action launched – ‘bang out of order’

Noel Whelan has claimed the decision to reduce the Man United away allocation for their trip to Chelsea is “bang out of order”.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the authorities should have made adequate plans with plenty of notice of the club’s schedules.

United sold almost 3000 tickets for the Premier League fixture on 22 October before the Metropolitan police reduced the allocation to 1500 because of “policing concerns”.

The Manchester United Supporters Trust subsequently negotiated an increase in the allocation, meaning 2330 fans can now attend the fixture.

Nevertheless, MUST released a statement on 13 October calling for the full complement of fans to be permitted – and issued Hammersmith and Fulham Council with a threat of legal action.

Whelan insisted he “can’t understand” the decision-making behind scuppering fans’ arrangements for the game.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think it’s really poor from the council.

“When you’ve given an allocation out, you’ve got to respect that. I don’t see what problems an extra 700 tickets would cause.

“They’ve had plenty of time to know this game was coming up, so I really can’t understand the problem.

“It’s a disgrace, bang out of order. I know they’ll have their reason, but arrangements will have been put in place and it’s just scuppered that completely.”

The game was moved from Sunday 23 October to a day earlier due to Chelsea’s participation in the Champions League.

The last four meetings between the two sides in the Premier League have ended in draws.
