Pundit can’t believe Newcastle United controversy as Shearer hits out
Newcastle United should have been awarded a first-half goal in their game against Brighton (13 August).
That’s according to former Aston Villa and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Callum Wilson’s attempts to open the scoring at the AMEX.
The 30-year-old had his boot level with Lewis Dunk’s head while challenging for the ball and the referee immediately blew the whistle.
Alan Shearer highlighted the incident on the BBC’s Match of the Day programme claiming the referee should have waited for the attack to finish before blowing his whistle so it could be checked by VAR.
The ball ended up in the back of the net with Wilson thinking he had given his side the lead.
McLeish insists the goal should have stood.
“I would have said, that should have been a goal,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.
“Attackers go for the ball and he got the ball. Wilson did not make contact with Dunk. If you get it cleanly then surely it has to be allowed.
“If it is clean then it doesn’t matter where your foot is. You are giving the found on a potentially dangerous play?
“It doesn’t make sense.”

Newcastle were second best in the game and can thank Nick Pope for saving a point.
Eddie Howe’s side are next in action against Man City on Sunday (21 August).
In other news, sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle United are submitting a £25m+ Joao Pedro bid as two marquee signings lined up.
