Pundit casts doubt on Tottenham swoop for Romero after Romano reveals 'Plan B'
Frank McAvennie isn’t confident Tottenham will sign Cristian Romero in a £40million-plus deal after an update from Fabrizio Romano.
The former West Ham hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Spurs don’t have that kind of money to spend.
On Monday (26th July), transfer guru Romano revealed Tottenham’s backup plan if they fail to sign Romero.
He claims Spurs will target all three Takehiro Tomiyasu, Nikola Milenkovic and Kurt Zouma from Bologna, Fiorentina and Chelsea respectively.
On 8th July, Football Insider revealed Spurs had agreed personal terms with Tomiyasu as he looks set to leave Italy.
This site also understands Romero has accepted Tottenham’s offer of a long term contract while Fabio Paratici negotiates the structure of the £40million-plus deal.

McAvennie insists Tottenham’s backup plan proves they aren’t confident of bringing Romero to north London.
“They are trying to sort of the £40million, the structure of it,” McAvennie told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“That’s not the same as spending £40million. It’s a lot of talking.
“I don’t think they have the money. They are still paying for that stadium so they can’t.
“It’s a wonderful venue but they still have to pay for it. I highly doubt they are going to pay £40million or £50million all at once for any player.
“They just can’t do it. It will be interesting to see if they get this guy over the line. I don’t see it.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if they are still paying for him in three or four years time.
“If that report is true, about the other lads, it wouldn’t fill me with confidence that a deal will get done.
“That can’t be good news.”
