Pundit cites Antonio after 'incredible' Newcastle player development

Joelinton’s transformation at Newcastle United is reminiscent of Michail Antonio’s at West Ham, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Tottenham and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, heaped praise on Joelinton, 25, for his “incredible mental strength.”

Joelinton has shone in a new central midfield role under Eddie Howe.

The Brazilian scooped up the man of the match award in Newcastle’s last Premier League match against Man United.

Speaking to Sportsmail (29 December) the £40million signing revealed how Eddie Howe’s “trust” is helping him realise his potential on Tyneside.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Joelinton’s form, Robinson said:“It reminds me of what happened with Antonio but in the other direction.

“He deserves all of the plaudits he is getting. Football is a game of opinions. Joelinton has been on the end of a lot of bad ones since coming to England.

“To turn in the performances he is now, in an unfamiliar position, deserves nothing but huge credit. He’s shown incredible mental strength.

“He’s been Newcastle’s best player since Eddie Howe came in. When you listen to what the players say, he’s the best player at training. That tells me a lot. It was clearly only a matter of time before he came good.

“He seems to have found a new lease of life under Howe in a new position. They really need him to continue in that vein if they are going to stay up this season.”
