Pundit cites Bamford as big-money Leeds signing predicted after U-turn

Alex McLeish has suggested injuries could force Leeds United to “plunge” into the transfer market before the end of the window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Scotland boss insisted the Whites would assess the likes of Patrick Bamford before sanctioning any deals.

As reported by the Daily Mail on Tuesday (18 January), Leeds were looking to spend limited amounts this month.

However, numerous absences have reportedly forced the Yorkshire giants into a U-turn.

The Whites have reportedly had a £15million bid for top target Brendan Aaronson rejected by RB Salzburg.

Several big-name players have suffered injury blows at Leeds this season, including Bamford, Kalvin Phillips and Rodrigo Moreno.

McLeish suggested Bielsa would have to make judgements on his absentees before making any transfer moves this month.

Discussing the possibility of Leeds doing any business before the end of the window, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It depends on how the injuries are doing. Whether Bamford is close again and one or two others.

“There’s a sense when you’re not splashing millions, then you tend to maybe overplay the group that you have. The ones you really trust.

“To see Bielsa coming through a pretty rough spell with the result against West Ham is nothing short of remarkable.

“But at some stage, they will have to plunge into the market. Aston Villa came up, spent a couple of million and just narrowly stayed up in the Premier League.

“Bielsa probably hasn’t splashed out the millions some other clubs have. There will come a time when Leeds need to enhance.”

Bamford suffered an ankle injury in September that kept him out for nine league games.

He then picked up a hamstring problem during his 22-minute cameo against Brentford in December.
