Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa

Noel Whelan has claimed Marcelo Bielsa called Ryan Edmondson into the Leeds United matchday squad before a late U-turn.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-United forward explained how he had been told that the Argentine had earmarked the striker, 18, for a place in the 18 for last Saturday’s Championship clash against QPR.

Bielsa decided to promote the teenage forward after Eddie Nketiah broke down with a stomach injury on the eve of the match.

But Whelan revealed the Leeds boss then changed his mind on match day and Edmondson was absent from a bench that included five teenagers – Ilan Meslier, Jack Clarke, Robbie Gotts, Leif Davis and Mateusz Bogusz.

“I’ve been told Ryan Edmondson was pulled into the Leeds squad on Friday night, but then he wasn’t on the bench against QPR on Saturday,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“I don’t know what’s going on there.

“He doesn’t seem to be making any headway in his Leeds career, even though he is a different type of striker to our other ones.”

Nketiah-less Leeds went on beat QPR 2-0, with goals from Tyler Roberts on his first league start of the campaign and Jack Harrison.

Edmondson has failed to make a single Leeds matchday squad this season after making two senior appearances for the club before this campaign.

However, the England Under-19 international has a been a regular and prolific scorer for the club’s Under-23s side.

In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has heard who will take over the centre-forward mantle if Patrick Bamford gets injured.
